January 26, 2013MONROE, La. -- With three weeks until opening day, the ULM Baseball team kicked off spring practice Friday afternoon at Warhawk Field.
"Everyone was extremely excited to get on the field today," said head coach Jeff Schexnaider. "We have been waiting for today since the final practice of the fall season. When the players returned in early January we could only do group workouts. The team was ready to put their gear on as we got things going today."
The team completed various team drills for approximately 90 minutes before a team scrimmage to conclude the first day of practice.
ULM posted a 32-30 mark a season ago and the team claimed the Sun Belt Tournament Championship en route to an appearance in the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional.
"We were fortunate to have a great year last year as we won the Sun Belt Tournament and advanced to the NCAA Regionals," Schexnaider added. "However, our approach to this season is no different. The guys will work hard each and every practice and we just hope we are fortunate again to have a strong season."
ULM returns five position starters, but the squad will be breaking a trio of starters along the infield after the departures of Caleb Clowers (2B), Joey Rapp (1B), Jeremy Sy (SS).
The Warhawks lost a total of five pitchers from last season's squad including starter Randy Zeigler and relievers Wil Browning and Kendall Thamm. To help fill the vacant spots, the coaching staff added a total of nine pitchers to this season's squad.
The Warhawks open the 2013 schedule on Friday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m. against Wake Forest in the first of four games for club in the ULM Tournament. ULM will face Alcorn State a day later, before concluding the tournament with twinbill on Feb. 17 (vs. Wake Forest, 11 a.m.; vs. Alcorn State, 3 p.m.).
