ULM talks South Alabama
2012 has already been a season of many, many firsts for the Warhawks, but they are trying to avoid one big first this Saturday against South Alabama; a loss in the team's first meeting.
The Jaguars enter the Sun Belt Conference game in Malone Stadium on the high of picking up the program's first win over a FBS team; beating conference foe FAU last week in overtime. The game helped to land South Alabama their second straight conference special teams player of the week honors.
"We're facing a football team that's getting better and better every week, ULM Head Coach Todd Berry said. "They obviously had a huge win over Florida Atlantic this weekend in a game very similar to ours in the sense that they had to come back from a 14-point deficit late in the game and they did it in multiple overtimes. It's a group that I've really enjoyed watching so far."
Senior linebacker DaCorris Ford echoed his coach's statements on ULM's game against South Alabama.
"I would agree that this will be a tough game, but I feel as though we've played them already because we have played a lot of teams and we've seen a lot of schemes. I feel like we prepared well for those games and that helped us for South Alabama," he said. "We'll prepare more for them this week. They try to open up their whole playbook. They aren't going to run the same plays in the game."
- South Alabama's win continued the streak of new conference member start-up programs winning a game in their first season of league play.
o The caveat to this, WKU was a FCS transition, not a new start-up program like FAU & FIU. FIU had three wins in their first Sun Belt season, 2005, but all were vacated due to NCAA rule violations.
- ULM's 5-2 record is the best record for a Warhawk team since moving into FBS in 1994.
- Neither team placed a player on the pre-season, but expect several from each team to be on the post-season list.
- Former Warhawk linebacker Ben Giles is listed on the 2-deep at middle linebacker for South Alabama.
