Jags outshoot Warhawks

ULM looked to pick up their second straight Sun Belt Conference win on Thursday night against South Alabama (7-6, 4-1). The Warhawks though dug themselves in too deep of a hole in the first half though as they came up just short in a 77-72 decision.

"First of all, I thought we played hard in the second half to make a game of it," Head Coach Keith Richard said. "I don't like being down that far (17 points) for them to have to do that, but I'm still proud of our players from that respect to make a game of it."

ULM (2-8, 1-3) was able to pull within three points late in the first half on Trey Lindsey's tip in, before a quick cold spell helped to propel the Jaguars to a 36-28 half time difference.

Also helping the Jags to pull away in the game was a blistering 59.1% shooting percentage, including Augustine Rubit who finished with a new career high 32 points and ended the game 11-12, although his one miss was a self-rejected dunk attempt. Rubit also had 13 rebounds to complete his double-double.

"It's going to be hard for us to win that game with that team shooting 59% from the field," Richard said. "They out physicaled us, in terms of scoring the ball; we had a hard time stopping them."

The Warhawks did manage to make several stops and forced 25 turnovers in the game; however 12 second chance points for the Jaguars and a 2:1 rebounding margin, accompanied with leading scorer Trent Mackey going just 2-12 on three point attempts doomed the Warhawks offensively.

Next up for ULM will be a trip to Denton, Texas for a 7pm, Saturday game against the Mean Green of North Texas (5-9, 0-3).
