Smith Commits

The ULM Warhawks have long recruited East Texas hard, and landed solid prospects from the area. Head Coach Todd Berry got a jump on his 2014 signing class on Wednesday, stretching into West Texas' Smithson Valley, Spring Branch, for Garrett Smith.

The 6'2", 205 quarterback gave his commitment to Berry following an unofficial visit over the weekend.

"We rode around the campus this weekend with Coach Berry," Smith said. "We spent about three hours there on campus with him and got to see all of the facilities and meet the coaches. I really liked meeting him along with offensive coordinator Steve Farmer. Me and my parents were just really impressed with everything we saw, and I knew that I wanted to be a part of it."

During his junior season, Smith accounted for over 2,000 of total offense, including 1,317 through the air, while recording 17 touch downs. This helped to lead the Rangers to a 11-1 record overall.

"We didn't' have too many junior starters last season, so it was great to be out there with them and play up in competition," he said. "This year I'm anxious to get out there and show what I can do as a senior."

Smith drew interest from Texas State, Tulsa, and UTSA before committing to the Warhawks.

"While on my visit I got to meet former player Cody Wells, who will be a graduate assistant this year," Smith said. "He had a lot of great things to say about the program and coach Berry and that really made me feel great about my decision."

The one negative that Smith had was the distance. Malone Stadium sits just over eight hours away from his hometown, but the family feel he received at ULM made the distance a non-issue.

"I think being around an extended family like I saw at ULM will make the distance not an issue," he said. "I'm looking forward to seeing them play at Texas State this season, as well as the game I get to make my official visit for."
