Four named All-Louisiana

New Page 1
BATON ROUGE, La. -- A total of four ULM football players earned All-Louisiana honors as the Louisiana Sports Writers' Association released its annual team today.

Josh Allen, Justin Manton and Isaiah Newsome earned First-Team All-Louisiana honors, while Gerrand Johnson earned Second Team All-Louisiana accolades.

Senior Josh Allen started at 12 games at center during the 2013 season and was part of the line that saw the Warhawks rack up a season high 571 yards of total offense in the 48-10 win over Grambling State. Allen was also part of a school-record 104 plays in the club's 21-19 win at Wake Forest; it was the first-ever win over an ACC program for the Warhawks. In all, Allen helped ULM tally 350 or more yards of total offense in four of the seven conference games.

Junior punter Justin Manton averaged 45.8 yard per punt (80 punts; 3,664 yards) to finish the regular season as the SBC leader and he is currently sixth among all FBS punters. Manton had a total of 28 punts go for 50 or more yards, including four of 60 or more yards. He set a career-high with a 77-yard punt at Baylor, which placed him in a tie for second with John Kelly who had a 77 yard punt at McNeese State during the 1962 season. One of Manton's biggest plays of the season came in the finale at UL-Lafayette as the junior faked a punt on fourth and four at the ULM 28-yard line. His 14-yard rush for a first down kept the Warhawk drive alive and eventually led to a ULM touchdown, putting the team in front, 28-21.

Isaiah Newsome led the Warhawk defense in both interceptions (four) and interception return yards (175). The senior started all 12 games in the secondary and finished with 48 total tackles (31 solo, 17 asst), including three for a loss as well as three pass breakups and seven deflections. Newsome made his name known as he recorded two interception returns for scores in ULM's win at Texas State. The Petal, Miss., native had returns of 71- and 75-yards and he is just one of four players in FBS history to return two interceptions (both of 70 or more yards) for touchdowns (first since the 1988 season). He earned a spot on SportsCenter's Top-10 for his performance as he came in at number five. Newsome also was awarded a total of 11 honors for the week.

Gerrand Johnson, who started all 12 games at nose tackle, tied for the team lead with 11.0 tackles for loss and finished fourth on the team with 56 total tackles (24 solo, 32 asst). Johnson also registered one sack and three quarterback hurries during the 2013 season. In the Sun Belt opener against Western Kentucky, the Rayville, La., native tallied seven tackles (three solo, four asst) and recorded one for loss. In the home finale against Arkansas State, Johnson tied a career high with 10 tackles (four solo, six asst).
