1. Middle Tennessee (2) - Previous rank: 4
Back to back wins over bigger
programs have propelled the Blue Raiders to the top of the publisher poll.
The Tony Franklin
offense has been quite efficient and quarterback Dwight Dasher appears to be
gaining confidence by the week.
2. Troy (1) – Previous rank: 5 The Trojans looked more
like the team everyone expected in dispatching UAB. Levi Brown was
outstanding in the passing game as Troy rolled up more than 500 yards of
3.Arkansas State (1) – Previous rank: 1
Used the bye week in preparation for big
battle with Troy for Belt supremacy,
but ASU has the luxury of
having the game in Jonesboro.
Winner will get leg up in SBC race.
4. FIU – Previous rank: 2 The Golden Panthers missed
an opportunity for a landmark win in a road setback at Rutgers. Their game
with Toledo this week will be one of the most intriguing games on the
5. Louisiana-Lafayette – Previous rank: 1 The Cajuns
were respectable at LSU as the offense
had 272 yards of total offense.
The Cajun defense certainly earned some praise against the Tigers. Defensive
back Gerren Blount looks like a playmaker.
6. Florida Atlantic – Previous rank: 8 Gave South Carolina a big scare, trailing by one at
half. Owls with 300 yards of offense but little in second half.
The Owls need more depth
to emerge on the defensive line.
7. ULM – Previous rank: 7 Last season Head Coach
Charlie Weatherbie described their game against Tulane as a sleep walking
performance. Their game against Arizona State could be described in
the same way. The Warhawks have had a very entertaining series with
FAU in recent years and the two teams will likely play another exciting game
this weekend. ULM needs to improve on special teams.
8. North Texas – Previous rank: 6 Without Riley Dodge at
quarterback, the Mean Green are a different team. Fortunately for them,
Dodge should return this week for the conference opener against Middle
Tennessee. He'll need a big game against a ball hawking Blue Raider defense.
9. WKU – Previous rank: 9 After losing to Central
Arkansas convincingly, it looks likely that the Hilltoppers will be
underdogs in every game the rest of the way. They are likely to trip up a
conference opponent at some point, but they face a long uphill climb.
Until prove otherwise, No. 120,
last in the FBS.
