Scrimmage Recap

The Warhawks opened Malone Stadium on Saturday night showing fans a glimpse of things to come for the 2012 season.
Kickers Justin Manton and Caleb Gammel took turns to open the scrimmage with live kick off drills. Both placed kicks inside the five yard line, with Manton also managing to put one through the end zone for a touchback. Sophomore Tyler Cain returned the kicks, averaging 16 yards per return attempt. Later in the scrimmage session, Cortney Davis retuned a Manton kick 90 yards for a score.

Quarterbacks Earnest Carrington and Brayle Brown took the majority of the snaps on offense, with Brown getting to lead a total of five series. Brown had several nice completions, including long strikes for 42 yards to Tavarese Maye and Brent Leonard. The pass to Leonard was his first of three TD passes.
Carrington showed his good speed while picking up 30 yards rushing on the night, but struggled with the wet conditions, fumbling on several drives.
Defensively, the front trio of Joey Gautney, Gerrand Johnson, and Kentarius Caldwell all applied pressure to all of the quarterbacks, while stuffing the running game time and time again.
In the Warhawk secondary, Otis Peterson and Eddie Vincent each collected interceptions, while pass break ups were recorded by Brandon Hardy and R.J Young.
Practice continues in preparation for the season opener at Arkansas with sessions beginning again on Tuesday with the next two Mondays off as classes begin.
