Bayou Jamb 2009
Despite ULM not having a home game for another two weeks,
the campus took on a game day atmosphere, as Malone Stadium played host to the

fourth annual Bayou Jamb. The event has come to signal the beginning of the
high school football games in northeastern Louisiana, while giving fans a small
taste of the football action to come from area schools, including a pair of
nationally ranked teams
The three games were shortened to two 15 minute halves,
without overtime.
Oak Grove vs. Jonesboro-Hodge
The opening game of the evening featured a battle of the
Tigers, as Oak Grove squared off against Jonesboro-Hodge. Both teams made brief
playoff runs in the 2008 season, with Oak Grove advancing to the quarterfinals
in class 1A, while Jonesboro-Hodge dropped a first round 2A contest to Calvary
Baptist.
Jonesboro-Hodge's
Robdonovan Lewis was named the game's MVP with a pair of touchdowns, but it
was the Tigers of Oak Grove that prevailed in the end, 25-14.
Jonesboro-Hodge struck first with a 50 yard end-around run
by Lewis from the receiver position. The ensuing PAT was no good. Oak Grove
answered with a long score of their own, as Kendrick Jackson evened the score at
6. The ensuing two-point conversion was no good.
Lewis was not done on the evening though, as a third and
long from their own seven yard line ended with him hauling in an amazing over
the shoulder touchdown reception to put the Tiger back on top 14-6, following a
successful two-point conversion.
Oak Grove then rattled off 19 unanswered points, as
sophomore Jacob Pippin scored a pair of touchdowns of his own from one and two
yards out to pace the Tigers.
Oak Grove will open the season on September 3 hosting
Rayville, while Jonesboro-Hodge will host Winnfield on September 4.
West Monroe vs. Rayville
The West Monroe Rebels entered the contest looking to build
on the momentum from last season's state-runner up title, but having to replace
playmakers such as D.J. Banks, Barkevious Mingo, and Ladarius Adams is a
daunting task. Rayville Head Coach Bo Barton is looking to replace his own
share of players, as he must replace offensive threats Kenny Bell who signed
with Alabama, and Abrecus Martinez.
West Monroe didn't miss a beat though as they rolled 23 - 0
win over the Hornets.
Deon Fowler got West Monroe's first score in the game, as
he took a bubble pass from Paul Turner 66 yards. The Rebel defense held to a
three and out stand, and on the next possession, West Monroe would strike
again. Junior
Tyler Cain scampered 42 yards for the score, putting West Monroe up 13-0.
Kicker Cody Hollis tacked on a 37 yard field goal to cap off the first half
scoring.
The lone score in the second half was a Rebel score by
Doncorius Powell from 42 yards out.
West Monroe ranks #41 in the
Rivals100, and will start the 2009 season on the road, as they travel to
Leesville September 4. Rayville will travel to Oak Grove for a September 3
contest.
Neville vs. Bastrop
In a preview of week eight, the District 3-4A powerhouses
of Neville and Bastrop closed the night out with another hard hitting chapter of
their rivalry.
The Tiger defense held Bastrop to a three and out series to
open the game. This was followed by a quick three play drive that was capped
off by a
Taylor Burch pass to Corry Sampognaro to put Neville up 7-0. Neville
looked to be running away with the game, going up 13-0 on Cedrico Pollard's
three yard run.
Jonathon Daniels finally got Bastrop on the board with a 75
yard, but the Ram offense couldn't muster much offense beyond that score.
Andravious Brandon's interception of Burch late in the
second half looked to be the spark that the Rams were looking for in the second
half, but turned the ball over on downs with just over two minutes remaining.
