Football stadiums will soon be packed with ecstatic fans and hungry teams. The wait is finally over and college football is back. For ULM the first game of the season is against Southeastern, an in-state opponent that the Warhawks know well. In the previous matchup in 2010, the Warhawks got by the Lions 21-20 at Malone Stadium.
Head coach Matt Viator is heading into his third year with hopes for a promising season. In his first two season the Warhawks posted a record of (4-8). That record does not reflect the talent that the Warhawks have in place, but turnovers and costly penalties led to two losing seasons.
The ultimate goal for the Warhawks is to make a bowl game and this year could be special.
Keys to a winning season
Spread the ball around the field and use the size and agility of senior receiver RJ Turner and efficient route running from senior receiver D’Marius Gillespie for big plays in the passing game. Obviously Marcus Green will get his touches throughout the game. The run-pass option worked well last year and Caleb Evans should continue to run the ball and use his speed to break off long runs.
Use the run game to open up passing lanes for Caleb Evans. Senior Derrick Gore, the former Alabama transfer, has proven to be a leader and the best ball carrier going forward. He ran for 585 yards to go with six touchdowns.
Put pressure on the quarterback and avoid giving up big plays on defense. Senior linebacker David Griffith has been a force with his sideline to sideline speed. Look for the secondary to be much improved as well, in which most of the starters are back and healthy.
Tackling was a huge issue last year, but with the completion of summer and training camp that shouldn't be a problem for the 2018 season.
Force turnovers and score in other areas. The punt and kickoff return game should be as electric as it was last year, the Warhawks should build off of that success to keep their opponents on their heels.
Players to watch
Jr. OL Devin Jackson Jr One of the most important players on the offensive line, so the offense will rely on his veteran presence.
So. DB Cory Straughter The young corner showed some potential last year, but in year two his play should elevate. He has the speed but at 5’10 Straughter is a scrappy defender.
Jr. LB Chase Day He had some nagging injuries last year but he solidifies the defense with his presence and with his sure tackling ability.
Sr. DT Derion Ford he is a force in the middle, the run defense should be much improved this year.
If all things come to fruition, the Warhawks can be one of the most dangerous teams in the Sun Belt as well as in the FBS.
The Warhawks will host Southeastern on Thursday, August 30, at 7 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN+.
