Warhawks Fall in Two Heartbreakers

WARHAWKS FALL JUST SHORT TO CAJUNS

The Warhawks had a strong first half, but a 3rd quarter scoring drought doomed UM as they fell in a close one to in-state rivals ULL 65-59.

ULM was able to turn defense into offense early in the game, as Alexis Collins picked off an errant Cajuns pass and turned it into an easy layup to give ULM an early 5-0 lead. The Warhawks were able to get easy buckets in the paint and raced out to an 18-12 lead after the first quarter.

ULM was able to open up an 11 point lead with just over 3 minutes left in the first half after making 4/5 field goals. However, the Cajuns were ale to chip into the ULM lead, ending the half on a 10-4 run to cut the Warhawk lead at half to 32-26.

ULM has been plagued this year by slow quarters. They are usually able to hang with their opponents for 2 or 3 quarters of the game, but one of those quarters dooms them. That trend continued in this game. The Warhawks had 12 turnovers in the third quarter and ULL’s Simone Fields took over the game. ULM had some key players get into foul trouble, so their usual ball handlers and shot creators were not able to be in the game to create easy shots.

ULM did their best in the fourth to make it a close game as they started the final quarter on an 11-4 run. Unfortunately, they ran out of gas as the Cajuns answered with a 10-0 run of their own.

ULM got the game within 3 with just over 20 seconds left, but they only had 2 fouls of the 5 needed to get the Cajuns on the free throw line. The Cajuns made their last 4 free throws to ice the game.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: ANDREANNA JACKSON continued her strong play as of late and had a ULM-high 19 points.

The Warhawks return to action Thursday night as they travel to Coastal Carolina Thursday night for a 6 P.M. tipoff.

WARHAWKS LOSE HEARTBREAKER TO RAGIN CAJUNS

ULM had their best offensive game of conference play, if not the season, but they fell just short as ULL’s Jonathan Stove hit a halfcourt shot as time expired to beat the Warhawks 85-84.

ULM has had many close games this conference season, despite their 1-13 conference record. This game was no exception. ULM had the advantage for the majority of the first half and continued that into the second half. .ULM took a 32-25 lead going into the half, and expanded that lead to 12 with 9 minutes left in the game.

With the Cajuns being down big late in the game, they started throwing up 3 points shots and they all went down. The Warhawks tried to answer by getting the ball inside and making layups. The Cajuns made up the deficit by continuing to make 3’s while the Warhawks struggled from the free throw line, shooting 9/19 in the second half. After the Cajuns scored on a putback with 3.8 seconds left, they attempted to miss the free-throw on the and-one opportunity. They were called for an over the back call before the clock started, so no time ran off the clock. Roderick Taylor went to the line and missed two free throws. Jonathan Stove got the rebound and ran the ball up court, throwing up a half court shot as time ran out that was good.

PLAYER OF THE GAME: PRINCE COOPER had a career-high 17 points to lead the Warhawks in scoring.

The Warhawks return to action next Saturday as they play in the second game of a doubleheader at Appalachian State. Tipoff will be around 2 P.M.
