Warhawks notch Win

The last time Malone Stadium played host to a Southland Conference team was in 2005. The then Indians hosted in-state rival Northwestern State in a game that saw ULM jump out to a 23-0 half-time lead, only to see the Demons come from behind in the second half for a 27-23 shocking upset. This time though the close game went in favor of the home standing Warhawks in a 21-20 victory.
Redshirt freshmen Kolton Browning and Tavarese Maye connected with a 47 yard pass-reception at the start of the fourth quarter to give ULM the final lead.
"I've never been around a bad win, but that's probably the ugliest win I've ever been around," first year Head Coach Todd Berry said after his first career win at ULM.
The Warhawks never trailed in total yardage, but three first half three and outs and interception in the opening half
After receiving the opening kick off, the Warhawks failed to move the ball, going three and out. Southeastern answered with a seven play, 71 yard drive to given them an early seven point lead. ULM would struggle offensively with no first downs in the opening quarter, but did out gain the Lions in total offense 92-58.
ULM broke onto the scoreboard with a ten yard scamper by Browning, the first of his career, in the second quarter. The play also saw senior running back Frank Goodin with a key block inside the five yard line to allow the score.
"I saw nobody and felt like I was getting rushed," Browning said of the play. "I stepped to the side and saw nothing but green grass ahead of me, and I saw Frank out of the corner of my eye, I didn't see the block, but I heard it. It probably saved the touchdown."
Junior Anthony McCall got credit for the second ULM score. On the play, Browning connected with Luther Ambrose for 39 yard pass. Ambrose fumbled at the 16 yard line; the fumble was kicked in the endzone and recovered by McCall for the score. The PAT by junior Radi Jabour gave the Warhawks a 14-7 halftime advantage.
The opening quarter of the second half was dominated by the Lions. Quarterback Tyler Beatty connected with Sim Yarborough for his second TD reception of the game, tying the score at 14. The reception was his 22nd career score and set a new SLU record.
Just before the close of the third quarter, Zeke Jones would punch in a two yard run to again give SLU the lead 20-14, after the Seth Sebastian PAT was missed.
Beatty looked to lead his team down field for a late score, but the drive was stopped at the SLU 27 yard line by a Cameron Blakes interception.
ULM will travel to # Auburn for another non-conference game. Kickoff for the ESPNU televised game is scheduled for 11am.
